The Ekiti State Police Command has warned residents against unruly
behaviour and acts that could threaten security as President Goodluck
Jonathan and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives
Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, visit the state this week for
their presidential campaigns.
The statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr.
Victor Babayemi, said the police have tightened security in view of the
scheduled visit of the President, and General Buhari to Ekiti for their
campaign in the state on Tuesday January 13, and Wednesday January 14
respectively.
In a statement by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu,
on Sunday, the police gave notice that some roads in the state would be
closed during the two days, and begged road users for understanding.
“The state command has put in place comprehensive security
arrangements, in partnership with sister security agencies to ensure
that the visits are successful and hitch-free.
“There will be diversion of traffic at the following places; Little by
Little Junction, Ijigbo Roundabout, Atikankan Area, Oke
Ese/Okesa/Ereguru Roundabout, Okeyinmi/First Bank Roundabout, Post
Office Roundabout and Dallimore Junction. Road users are therefore
enjoined to make use of alternative routes between 6a.m. and 6p.m. on
these days.”
The APC in Ekiti State has said it had uncovered a plot by a particular
political party to disrupt the campaign rally for its presidential
candidate, General Buhari, slated for Wednesday, January 14 in
Ado-Ekiti.
In a statement by its state Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, the
party said it had incontrovertible evidence that a certain political
party had mapped out plans to unleash terror on APC members and
supporters by using fake soldiers imported from neighbouring countries
to be mixed with local miscreants to cause mayhem.
“The local miscreants are to help identify APC and their supporters to
be attacked at checkpoints and so prevent them from entering the state.
The Plan B is to deck PDP thugs in APC uniforms to shoot APC members
coming to the rally as PDP did in Rivers State,” Olatubosun explained.
“The party said Governor Ayodele Fayose’s utterances in Lagos last week
had confirmed the dastardly plan, stressing that as the arrowhead of
PDP’s rigging machine, his boast that President Jonathan would win like
he won the June 21 governorship election pointed to the same pattern of
his boast before that controversial election,” Olatubosun said.
Also, the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti diocese, Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye,
has called on politicians canvassing for elective posts to discuss ideas
and policies that will enhance the growth and development of the
country.
The bishop also dissociated himself from an online report published on
Friday, January 9, and called for the arrest and prosecution of Buhari
for making unguarded statements.
The bishop said he was not aware of the online report until he started receiving calls from concerned people.
He said: “A news story was published in 2012 by ‘Punch’ and some
newspapers on my comment on the alleged statement by Buhari after the
2011 general election in Nigeria. It is the story the dirty people are
now manipulating as an interview I just granted in 2015.”
He described the online story as a practical example of “politics of
desperation and manipulation,” describing those behind the story as
dirty and agents of “division and darkness.
