Nigerian military personnel in action

Over 41 members of the Boko Haram terrorist sect were felled by bullets of the Nigerian military in a failed attempt by the terrorists to capture Biu, the largest town in the south of Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, on Wednesday.
It was gathered from a military source that the insurgents suffered heavy casualties as many of them who attempted to invade the Army barracks in the town were killed.  The source said 41 corpses of the insurgents lay at different spots around the barracks.
He also revealed that an armoured tank was retrieved from the insurgents, while explaining that corpses of the insurgents were seen in other parts of the town.

Biu is over 200 kilometres from Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram, and remains one of the few towns yet to be captured by the Islamic fundamentalist sect.
One of the residents of the town, Adamu Sadiq, who spoke on phone from Biu to our correspondent in Maiduguri, said: "Sporadic shooting made many of us shiver this morning as the military engaged the members of Boko Haram in a fierce battle."
He said from all indications and the severity of the attack, the insurgents perhaps wanted to add the town to the list of captured territories.
Haruna , who spoke about 1pm on Wednesday, said the Nigerian troops fought hard to ward off the threat.
A senior military source in Maiduguri, who spoke anonymously, said it took the gallantry of the Nigerian military to repel the insurgents,
He noted that the attack was expected and the military were fully prepared.
He disclosed that the insurgents stormed the town in the early hours of Wednesday, shooting sporadically before the military responded and was able to repel them.
He said the casualties could "not be given now as the military is still taking positions and combing the town."
