The rumour making the rounds that members of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) had endorsed the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) has been described as untrue.
Ex-militants, under the aegis of Leadership, Peace and Cultural
Development Initiative (LPCDI), an umbrella body of all militants that
accepted amnesty, stated that they did not endorse Buhari as their
preferred candidate in the coming election.
President of the group, Reuben Wilson, in a press statement issued in
Port Harcourt and titled: “Re: The Hoax Called Buhari’s Endorsement by
MEND,” insisted that the group was not responsible for the statement
credited to MEND.
Part of the statement reads: “We have read and heard of reports in the
mass media on the purported endorsement of the APC presidential
candidate, Muhammadu , and have decided to inform the public that we,
the former leaders of militant camps who owned and controlled the
activities of MEND did not and could not have endorsed Buhari as our
candidate."
